A/C TIPS

At Air Plus, we want to give you the resources to get the most out of your air conditioning system between scheduled maintenances. Following these helpful tips will help to ensure a long life of your system:

  • To ensure efficient operation, check filters every month. Clean or replace as needed.
  • Have annual system maintenance service performed one month before the cooling system begins.
  • Keep the condensing unit free of debris.
  • Trim shrubs and plants near condensing unit to ensure proper air flow/circulation.
  • Get annual, detailed equipment inspections.
  • Don't block vents or ducts inside the house.
  • Caulk and install weather stripping around doors and windows.
  • Use shades, vented awnings and curtains or blinds to keep the sunlight out, especially in rooms facing west in the afternoon.

KEEP IT GREEN

Using your air conditioner efficiently can help reduce your energy usage. At Air Plus, we want to help you reduce air conditioning costs while keeping your home cool throughout the summer months and conserving energy at the same time. Our green tips on this page will help you do just that!

Heating & Cooling:

Heating and cooling account for about 56% of the energy use in a typical U.S. home, making it the largest energy expense for most homes. Following these tips will help to keep those expenses down:

  • Install a programmable thermostat that can be adjusted according to your schedule.
  • Use fans during the summer to create a wind chill effect that will make your home more comfortable. If you use air conditioning, a ceiling fan will allow you to raise the thermostat setting about four degrees Fahrenheit with no reduction in comfort.
  • Clean or replace filters once a month or as needed.

Ways to Save:

You can reduce your home's heating and cooling costs by as much as 30% through proper insulation and air duct cleaning:

  • If your air conditioner is old, consider purchasing a new, energy-efficient model. You could save up to 50% on your utility bill for cooling.
  • Don't place lamps or TV sets near your air-conditioning thermostat. The thermostat senses heat from these appliances, which can cause the air conditioner to run longer than necessary.
  • Don't set your thermostat at a colder setting than normal when you turn on your air conditioner. It will not cool your home any faster and could result in excessive cooling and, therefore, unnecessary expense.
  • Set your thermostat as high as comfortably possible in the summer. The less difference between the indoor and outdoor temperatures, the lower your overall cooling bill will be.
  • For air conditioners, look for a high Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER). The current minimum is 13 SEER for central air conditioners. *See our AC Unit Operating Cost Calculator*
  • Having a humidistat installed for seasonal customers while home is unoccupied can reduce energy usage by 50%.

AC UNIT OPERATING CALCULATOR

Use this online calculator to calculate the daily or monthly usage cost of your air conditioning unit. The AC Operating Cost based on the factors like Equipment Size, Cooling Hours and SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio).

To compare your current system to a new system, change the SEER to a higher SEER rating, for example: 16, then compare the energy savings.
